Russian intelligence & naval expansion

Expanding FSB

Oleg Syromolotov

4-8-15    First, FSB counterintelligence chief Oleg Syromolotov was appointed deputy foreign minister on March 19 and charged with managing counterterrorism operations….

FSB Col. Igor Barinov was appointed head of the newly created Federal Agency for Nationality Affairs….

Andrei Patrushev, the son of former FSB chief and Security Council head Nikolai Patrushev, was named to the Board of Directors of Gazprom Neft, which is the oil branch of energy giant Gazprom. For more than a decade, Putin has attempted to keep Rosneft and Gazprom as separate entities to maintain the balance of power between groups competing for influence in the Kremlin. The FSB, which oversees Rosneft via company chief and FSB member Igor Sechin, has sought to expand its influence into Gazprom, which traditionally has been overseen by the more liberal faction under Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev.       https://www.stratfor.com/sample/analysis/russian-intelligence-agency-expands-its-reach?amp%3Buuid=b3084bde-3ad4-4944-ac5e-54c93650f713&id=%2A%7CLIST%3AUID%7C%2A

Expanding SVR

7-13-16    The satellite imagery, which was compiled in a recent report on Russia’s global intelligence operation, shows that Moscow added several new buildings and structures to its intelligence headquarters, known as SVR, from 2007 to 2016, a period that saw a dramatic rise in Russian espionage operations, experts said.  http://freebeacon.com/national-security/russia-expands-foreign-intelligence-service/

12-29-15      Following decades of neglect, Russian naval forces are being modernized with advanced submarines and increasingly lethal ballistic and cruise missiles, according to a report by the Office of Naval Intelligence.

The naval buildup includes three new classes of advanced submarines and several new types of warships that the report warns will “provide a flexible platform for Russia to demonstrate offensive capability, threaten neighbors, project power regionally, and advance President Putin’s stated goal of returning Russia to clear great power status.”  http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/12/29/intelligence-report-warns-russian-naval-buildup.html

……………………….

10-28-15      “According to Russian Navy Chief Adm. Chirkov, the ‘intensity’ of Russian submarine patrols has risen by almost 50% over the last year,” Ferguson told an audience in Washington.
Or as another Navy official put it to CNN: “Russian submarine deployments are through the roof.”      http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/28/politics/russian-submarine-expansion-atlantic/
………………………………………………………
8-8-15     Comparison of naval powers of India and China shows numerical and qualitative superiority of Chinese in naval power.  Against one nuclear powered submarine of India, China has got 9.  Against 12 submarines of India, China has got 63 submarines.  Even in warships it is an unequal match.  Even if we embark on modernization and expansion India alone will never be able to match Chinese naval power.
